Can somebody explain why the military no longer believe they gain an operational advantage from search and rescue operations. I would have thought that the experience gained from searching for small or unusual objects at sea would come in useful when conducting anti submarine operations or searching for survivors following the sinking of a warship. It is not always desirable to be transmitting on sonar or radar when at war which is when a mark one eyeball comes into its own.
Units are not always front line so the ideal employment for these units is as a SAR squadron which allows continuity of flying hours in tricky conditions. When you consider these things the idea of farming search and rescue out to foreign companies does not seem quite so economically astute.

I have sent an email to my local MP Norman Baker MP (Transport Minister) for Lewes constituency, asking him to speak out against the Coastguard station cuts, in line with his LibDem colleague, the MP for Eastbourne.
Thanks to the Coastguard SOS website for highlighting the differences & notable inaction of specific MPs. Well done!

As a former Auxiliary Coastguard (Boscastle - 1995 to 2008) involved in the rescue of hundreds of people during the Boscastle flood in 2004, this really saddens me. If it hadn't been for the action of our DSO at the time, hundreds (yes hundreds) of people could have perished. Without the Falmouth MRCC this potential disaster could easily have become an actual disaster. The same logic applies to all MRCC's. Wake up and get sensible please.
